Objectives

In this module, we will take you through an approach to evaluating for substance abuse in patients. In addition to learning about how to raise the topic of substance abuse in your clinical discussions, you will develop an understanding of how to provide feedback to your patients and how to enhance motivation and negotiate a management plan that is specific to each individual. In particular, you will learn how to take a detailed substance use history, including asking questions about which substances have been used and whether previous treatments for substance abuse were undertaken, and will also learn the importance of taking a complete history, including occupational, sexual, psychiatric, and legal histories. Lastly, you will learn about the NIDA ‘Quick Screen’ for substance abuse and will gain an understanding of the approach to and management of common presentations, such as acute intoxication, acute life-threatening intoxication, and chronic substance use.
