Objectives

In this module, we will discuss an approach to patients presenting with a depressed mood. You will learn the diagnostic criteria for diagnosing a major depressive according to the DSM-5. We outline how to use this criteria to take a detailed history and to recognize other psychiatric and non-psychiatric conditions that might lead to a depressed mood. The many screening methods available are also discussed as well as formal risk assessment for suicide. Finally, you will learn how to create a management plan based on the clinical assessment.
