Objectives
In this module, we will provide a comprehensive overview of the approach to a patient presenting with vulvar pruritis and/or vaginal discharge. Critical questions to ask in history, including whether the itch is localized or diffuse and if discharge is a specific colour or has a particular smell, will be reviewed. The importance of obtaining a proper sexual history and what questions to ask will also be reviewed. Additionally, you will learn about specific signs to look for on physical exam, including presence of erythema or localized lesions on inspection and cervical motion tenderness on bimanual exam, and will gain an understanding about the special tests used to aid diagnosis, such as the KOH “whiff test” and the nucleic acid amplification test. Lastly, you will gain an understanding of the approach and management of some common conditions causing vulvar pruritis and vaginal discharge, such as lichen sclerosus and sexually transmitted illnesses.
