Objectives

In this module, we will discuss how to approach a patient presenting with a weakness. Critical questions to ask in history, such as temporal evolution of weakness and whether the weakness is localized or generalized, will be reviewed. The significance of key findings on physical exam, including speech difficulties, hemiparesis, and paraparesis, will also be discussed. Lastly, you will learn about causes of acute weakness that require immediate and urgent evaluation, such as stroke and cauda equina syndrome, and management of some other causes of weakness, such as inflammatory myopathies.
